My Experience in Thailand
Thailand gave me the opportunity to experience beautiful temples, vibrant markets, and one of the most memorable wildlife encounters I’ve ever had. Spending time with rescued elephants at an ethical sanctuary, feeding them, walking alongside them, and helping bathe them was an experience I’ll never forget. It also gave me a greater appreciation for Thailand’s culture, landscapes, and the incredible variety the country has to offer.
At the same time, Thailand was one of the more challenging destinations I’ve visited. I encountered multiple situations involving overcharging, scams, and confusing pricing, which meant I had to pay much closer attention than I normally do while traveling. Even so, I’m glad I experienced Thailand firsthand. It taught me to be a more aware traveler while still giving me memories and experiences I couldn’t have had anywhere else.
Know Before You Go
Dress respectfully for temple visits. Shoulders and knees should be covered, and shoes must be removed before entering most temples.
Download Grab. It’s the easiest and most reliable ride-hailing app in Thailand.
Be aware of common tourist scams. Tuk-tuk tours, taxi routes, gem shops, and attractions that are supposedly “closed” are some of the most common scams targeting visitors.
Respect the monarchy. The Thai royal family is deeply respected, and visitors should avoid making negative comments or jokes about the monarchy.
Stay hydrated and plan for heat. Thailand’s climate is hot and humid year-round, so lightweight clothing, sunscreen, and plenty of water will make sightseeing much more enjoyable.
