My Experience in Portugal

Portugal felt warm and inviting from the moment I arrived. I found it easy to navigate, easy to communicate, and filled with friendly people. Compared with some of Europe's larger cities, Lisbon felt more manageable, making it easy to explore without the same crowds or fast pace.

What I appreciated most was Portugal's relaxed pace. There was never a feeling that I had to rush from one attraction to the next. Instead, I found myself slowing down and enjoying the destination. Portugal offered the history, architecture, and charm I look for in Europe, but in a way that felt approachable and welcoming. It's a destination I would confidently recommend to anyone planning their first trip to Europe.

Know Before You Go

Restaurants often bring a couvert, such as bread, olives, butter, or cheese, before the meal. These items are not complimentary. If you don't want them, simply decline them

No car, no problem or leave them untouched to avoid being charged.

Some Portuguese highways have electronic-only tolls with no payment booths. Confirm that your rental includes a toll device and understand how toll charges will be billed before you drive away.

Many first-time visitors underestimate how hilly Lisbon and Porto are. Comfortable shoes are essential. Don't hesitate to use funiculars, elevators or trams to save your legs.

Dinner is later than you might expect. Outside tourist areas, dinner service often starts later than many Americans expect, and some restaurants may not open until around 7:00 p.m.
