MOROCCO
My Experience
Morocco was my first experience in Africa and introduced me to an incredible variety of landscapes and cultures. From the bustling streets of Marrakesh to the sand dunes of Merzouga and the Spanish influence of Tangier, every stop felt different from the last. Riding a camel through the Sahara and seeing so much of the country by road made me appreciate just how diverse Morocco really is.
As a woman, I also found Morocco more culturally restrictive than many places I’ve visited, and I was more mindful of local customs and my surroundings. An attempted theft of our luggage was also a reminder to stay alert while traveling. Even with those challenges, I’m glad I experienced Morocco. It was a memorable introduction to Africa and gave me a greater appreciation for the country’s landscapes, culture, and traditions.

Know Before You Go
1 ) Dress Modestly, Especially Women
Morocco is more conservative than many Western countries. Covering your shoulders and knees is a respectful choice, particularly in smaller towns and religious areas.
2 ) Keep Your Belongs Close
As in many popular tourist destinations, keep an eye on your valuables in busy markets and crowded areas.
3 ) Expect to Negotiate in the Medinas
Expect to negotiate in the medinas. Bargaining is common in markets and often expected. Be polite, smile, and don't feel pressured to buy.
4 ) Be Aware of Unofficial Guides in Medinas
Someone may offer directions and then expect payment. Politely decline and use your hotel, an official guide, or offline map when you need help.
5 ) Agree on Taxi Fares Before Ride
Ask the driver to use the meter where available, or confirm the full price before getting into the car.
